Preparing Children for the Start of School

These days, many excited children start 1st grade.

Outside Vear school in Tønsberg, there is a group looking forward to starting school.

– We will learn ABC and 123. I know all the letters of the alphabet. Gets an A+, says Anosh Resam.

– What have your parents taught you about school?

– We have to learn to sit still for a couple of hours, says Frida Kristoffersen.

– Will it be easy?

– Nope. Yoooo, the gang exclaims.

Dean Per Ludvik Kjendlie at the University of Southeast Norway says there is a lot both children and parents can do to prepare for the start of school.

Take a trip to school

– It pays to talk positively about the school. Feel free to go away and play in the school yard and get to know the school road. Tell the child what will happen on the first day of school. It is important so that the children are safe and can calm down a bit, he says.

Help children with relationships

Kjendlie says all children need a friend, and encourages parents to talk to their children about this.

– They can ask if you want to be my friend, and invite you home if that is the case. This part is important, he says.

Should experience mastery

Children who experience mastery gain self-confidence. Kjendlie says that not much is needed.

– They become independent when they dress themselves, take care of their things and tie their shoelaces themselves. Then they feel a bit big, he says.

Get to know other parents

Parents can get a lot out of having contact with like-minded people, Kjendlie believes.

– In a network you can share problems, joys and sorrows with others. Many people wonder the same thing.

Talk to children who are afraid

Kjendlie says that not all children want to talk about dreading starting school, but that you get a long way by asking questions.

– You can ask what they are excited about and what they are looking forward to. Talk about the nice things that will happen; play, new friends and learning. Ask questions, he says.
