As the largest German airline, Air Berlin had to file for bankruptcy in 2017 and cease flight operations. Six years later, the brand is now changing hands: Sundair founder Rossello paid around 120,000 euros for the name. There are already “some ideas” for use.
Six years after Air Berlin went bankrupt, the brand name of the largest German airline has been sold to the aviation entrepreneur Marcos Rossello, founder of the German leisure airline Sundair. The Air Berlin brand was transferred to Rossello’s Air 41 company in June, according to aviation news website Aerotelegraph. According to the most recent status report by the insolvency administrator, the purchase price for the Air Berlin creditors was EUR 120,190.
“Yes, we have acquired the trademark rights to Air Berlin,” Rossello confirmed to Aerotelegraph. It has not yet been decided what the brand will be used for. “There are some ideas. Anything is possible,” he said. However, it is unlikely that the businessman will make Air Berlin the new brand for his existing airlines. “Sundair is now well established,” continued Rossello.
The airline Air Berlin filed for bankruptcy on August 15, 2017 after years of losses and later had to stop flight operations. Parts of the company had been sold to Lufthansa and Easyjet at the time. There has now been a bidding process for the trademark rights. A spokesman for Flöther made it clear that the rights must also remain usable for the purposes of insolvency administration until the end of the proceedings. This was also the reason for the late sale of the rights. According to Aerotelegraph, insolvency administrator Lucas Flöther had hoped to be able to collect several million euros for the creditors with the sale of the trademark rights.
