Top 5 Affordable Station Wagons for Families: Rankings and Reviews

You know it, the family is suffocating! Or maybe you don’t even think so, but when your wife gives the order, you willy-nilly have to replace your current carriage with something more spacious and practical. And since you haven’t fallen into the fashion of oversized monsters of crossover or SUV concepts, which are big on the outside, but don’t offer much inside the place, you’re looking around for a station wagon – what can you get for normal money?

There used to be a time when you would head straight for Škodovka, but the great Fabia station wagon is already resting on eternity and the Octavia station wagon is again very expensive (currently it starts at 659,900 CZK). But don’t hang your head, we have five alternatives for you that offer enough living space and you can still buy them for a fairly normal price. So let’s get down to it:

dacia jogger

Starting price: CZK 417,500

The Jogger looks like a crossover, but an experienced eye will correctly see it as a station wagon.

With the first piece, we are on rather thin ice, because Dacia presents its Jogger as a crossover, but in fact it is only a slightly raised station wagon, so don’t be fooled by the modern marketing language. The Jogger is a simple, but very practical and incredibly spacious car that will provide the necessary living space even for a large family – after all, you can also have it in a seven-seater version! Only three cylinders (burning gasoline or LPG) take care of the drive, but they have enough power, don’t worry. And a hybrid will arrive by the end of the year.

Hyundai i30 kombi

Starting price: CZK 419,990

A simple and pleasant car, moreover for good money – that’s what the i30 station wagon is.

The immortal Hyundai i30 is a reliable fixture of the Czech market. Although it has been on sale since the end of 2016, it underwent a major upgrade in 2020 and will soon receive another wave of improvements that will keep it alive for a few more years. The i30 boasts a decent range of engines, starting with a smooth naturally aspirated four-cylinder and continuing with a turbocharged three-cylinder and a four-cylinder (with mild-hybrid support), only you have to indulge in the diesel. Hyundai is known on the Czech market for its affordable equipment, and the i30 is no exception, it is currently offered in a rich Family equipment package, which brings the most important things right from the starting price tag.

Kia Ceed SW

Starting price: CZK 439,980

The Ceed SW is also not very expensive, and you can do quite a lot with it.

Kia also offers a practical station wagon from the same South Korean stable, while the Ceed SW boasts a more dynamic design. Although it lacks a basic atmosphere in the range of engines (so you can have gasoline in the form of a turbocharged three-cylinder or four-cylinder), it still offers a turbodiesel (or a plug-in hybrid). Kia also scores with a seven-year warranty.

Renault Megane Grandtour

Starting price: CZK 493,000

The Megane Grandtour is also old, but it still looks modern and offers quite extensive equipment.

The combustion engine Megane is a discontinued model at the moment, but it still looks fresh, and it’s available for good money. It’s also still powered by four-cylinder engines burning petrol and diesel (or you can also have a plug-in hybrid), so you’re sure to choose. The suitcase is not really huge, but take it as an opportunity to learn how to pack more efficiently.

Fiat Tipo combi

Starting price: CZK 519,900

Photo: Fiat

The Tipo underwent a facelift two years ago, so it keeps pace with the times. However, don’t expect any technical fads.

We must not forget about the Italian Tipo, which belongs to the simpler ones in the given class of cars – which, however, the average customer will rather welcome. You will find everything you need in it in an uncomplicated form. The range of engines starts with a turbocharged three-cylinder and continues with a turbocharged four-cylinder, you can also go for a four-cylinder turbodiesel. The only mistake? Well, in our opinion, this car should be a few tens of thousands cheaper – try suggesting to the dealer that you’ll still visit Hyundai and see if they’ll make an effort to keep you.

Trunk volume: 550/1,425 l

As you can see, the offer is becoming thinner and more limited in terms of engines, but there is still plenty to choose from. Even under half a million. Which model do you go for…?

I would buy…

I’d rather go for a used one
