AIFF Explores Inclusion of OCI and PIO Footballers in Indian National Team

New Delhi ∙ The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has moved to consider Overseas Indians (OCIs) and Indians of Indian Origin (PIOs) in the Indian football team. The Federation formed a working committee to study the matter and submit a report.

According to the current law, both sides cannot participate in international competitions as part of the national team. Otherwise both parties have to accept Indian citizenship. The committee chaired by Punjab Football Association president Sameer Thapar will submit its internal report on January 31 next year. The other members of the committee will be decided later. The committee will collect details of football players among PIO and OCI card holders.

Currently, according to the law of the country, they cannot be included in the national teams. But before negotiating with the central government in this regard, a sufficient study needs to be done’ – AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey said.
