Former US President Trump Given Until August 25 to Appear in Court on New Charges

Former US President Donald Trump, who was charged with new charges on Monday for his practices during the 2020 elections, has been given until August 25 to appear before the courts in Georgia, according to the attorney general in charge of the file, Fanny Willis, which means that he has only 10 days until He surrenders “voluntarily”.

The public prosecutor, who has been investigating the file since 2021, said that she wants the trial in this case to take place “within 6 months.”

On Monday, a grand jury in Atlanta accused Trump and 18 other people of trying to overturn the outcome of the 2020 presidential election in the US state of Georgia, especially by putting pressure on polling officials, according to AFP.

This is the fourth indictment against the former Republican president, who is seeking to run for the White House in 2024.

New indictment

The Washington Post said:

Trump was charged late Monday with 13 new counts, including extortion, soliciting a public officer to violate his oath, conspiracy to impersonate a public official, conspiracy to commit fraud in the first degree and conspiracy to file false documents. Charges have been brought against Trump, along with 18 other people. A total of 41 charges were brought against the 19 defendants in the 98-page indictment. The new charges follow a two-and-a-half-year investigation by Attorney General Fannie Willis. The investigation was launched after a January 2021 phone call was leaked, during which Trump urged Georgia Secretary of State Brad Ravensburger to question the validity of thousands of ballots, especially in the densely populated Democratic district of Atlanta.

10 days deadline

Fannie Willis reported that Trump has until August 25 to “voluntarily” turn himself in to face the charges against him. She indicated that she is determined to prosecute Trump within 6 months.

A separate “private” grand jury heard 75 witnesses last year and submitted a confidential report in February recommending several charges.

This is the fourth case brought against Trump this year, which could lead to the first televised trial of a former president in American history.
