American Music Producer Clarence Avant Dies at 92: Remembering ‘The Black Godfather’

American music producer Clarence Avant, former chairman of music label Motown, died on Sunday at his home in Los Angeles at the age of 92. His family announced the news of his death in a statement.

“Clarence leaves behind a loving family and a sea of ​​friends and acquaintances who have changed the world and will continue to change the world for generations to come. The joy of his legacy softens the sorrow of our loss,” the statement read.

Avant is well known in the music world. During his long career he worked with big stars like JAY-Z and Diddy. Partly because of his great influence, he was nicknamed ‘The Black Godfather’.

In 2016 Avant received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and in 2021 he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. In 2019, streaming service Netflix made the documentary The Black Godfather about the life of the music producer.

Avant was married to Jacqueline for 54 years. She was shot dead in December 2021 during a burglary at their Beverly Hills home. The couple’s daughter, Nicole Avant, is married to Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos.
