In Bulgarian society, there is no feeling that it is possible to achieve fair sentences. We have a collapse of the whole feeling of statehood in Bulgaria. The big question is not only in the punishments, but in how we restore the trust of the Bulgarian citizens in the institutions. There is a way out of this vicious circle, and it starts with a change in the behavior of the politicians we trust. This is what the political scientist Hristo Panchugov said in the program “Investor Club” on Bloomberg TV Bulgaria with host Ivaylo Lakov.
“The resignation of Vezhdi Rashidov is the final phase of a nervous society. We already have a feeling of a severe lack of justice in Bulgarian society – for years. Obviously, any spark could ignite an extremely radicalized public dissatisfaction and retribution is sought at any cost for situations that arise,” the guest also said.
This is both good and bad news, because obviously there is no way to continue in the old way of making politics and communicating different situations in Bulgaria, he added. “However, this is an extremely explosive mixture that is used to radicalize, superimpose, create and reinforce a number of attitudes that are not necessarily productive for calming the political process and, of course, for Bulgarian democracy.”
In general, there is no feeling among Bulgarian politicians that entering into some institutional role, they must protect the dignity of this institution, stressed Panchugov. The example you set is important, because it is from politics that the change of attitudes should start, the political scientist believes.
Society reacts in this way because it has the feeling that something is being replaced, that something is being done “on the knees”, to put out some fires. There is no sense that this majority is sustainable and knows where it wants to end up. If there is a plan, it is good for the Bulgarian society to understand it. To seek the support of the Bulgarian citizens for this.
However, lost in this indignation was the fact that in the conversation, which was conducted on a microphone, there was doubt regarding the texts that were adopted in connection with the fight against domestic violence, and this also did not cause a reaction, Panchugov pointed out.
“Against the background of attempts to ride an extremely radical wave in Bulgarian society – both on the part of BSP and Vazrazhdane – we saw a rather nefarious opposition, with no passion and no desire to defend the things they believe in”.
On the international scene, the general instability can largely be defined as an effect of the conflict in Ukraine, which has been going on for almost two years now, commented the interlocutor. “The situation in North Africa coincided with a visit by the leaders of African countries to Russia. It is no coincidence that we also saw military coup attempts there.”
“The sense of general global instability spreading is a direct effect of what is happening in Ukraine and to some extent a conscious effort on the part of the Russian Federation. This is not helped by the lack of predictability regarding the US elections coming up. Trump’s high rating showed a very high division of American society, which is capable of accepting a figure like Trump, who is on the verge of fascistic behavior.”
