Human Immunodeficiency Virus or commonly known as HIV is a virus that attacks the human immune system. Until now, HIV/AIDS is still a health problem in the world.
Since the first case was found on April 5, 1987, Indonesia has reported one death from AIDS, namely a Dutch tourist who died at Sanglah General Hospital in Denpasar. The 13th country that reveals AIDS cases is Indonesia.
Even though the scale looks up and down, HIV cases in Indonesia tend to always increase. The Indonesian Ministry of Health estimates that there were 50,782 HIV cases in 2019. By March 2021, that figure had increased to 543,100. The five provinces with the largest number of HIV/AIDS cases are Papua (39,419), East Java (65,274), West Java (46,996), and DKI Jakarta (71,473).
Most people with HIV/AIDS are men with an age range of 25-49 years. Meanwhile, according to Asian model data from the Epidemic Model (AEM), the HIV incidence rate in Indonesia in 2022 is 0.09 percent, lower than the target of 0.19 percent. Since 2020, Indonesia’s goal has been to hit the incident target.
Effective action is needed to suppress the increase in HIV/AIDS so that the number of cases does not continue to increase. One of the most crucial aspects in reducing HIV/AIDS cases is the low level of public knowledge about the virus. This is done to reduce social stigma and discrimination as well as myths that develop in society so that the handling of HIV/AIDS can be more complete and successful.
