Ring of Fire Solar Eclipse: Date, Location, and Spectacular Views

Jakarta

Next October, the sky will be decorated with a “ring of fire” solar eclipse. During this event, the Moon appears slightly smaller than the Sun, so it cannot cover the entire disk.

This eclipse will not darken the sky like the total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017. A solar eclipse occurs when the new moon is directly between Earth and the Sun and casts its shadow on Earth.

A ring of fire solar eclipse occurs when the moon appears relatively small in the sky so it doesn’t completely cover the Sun’s disk, leaving behind a thin outer ring which is often called the ring of fire. Whether the Moon completely covers the disk of the Sun or not depends on the Moon’s distance from Earth.

The moon has a slightly elliptical orbit around the Earth. So, at two points in each month, it is at its furthest (apogee) and closest (perigee) to Earth. This event makes the Moon appear slightly smaller and slightly larger.

When is the ‘Ring of Fire’ Solar Eclipse?

Meanwhile, a ring of fire solar eclipse will occur on Saturday, October 14, 2023. Approximately 11 years after the same type of solar eclipse crossed the southwest United States on May 20, 2012.

This solar eclipse of the fire ring will be visible from the same region, across all eight US states from Oregon to Texas, according to NASA as quoted by Space.

On October 14, 2023, all of North and Central America, and most of South America will experience a solar eclipse. In all of these regions, a partial solar eclipse will appear with varying degrees of obscuration.

Most Beautiful Views in Mayan Temples

The ring of fire will only be visible on a track that is 118 to 137 miles (190 to 220 kilometers) wide. The line will run from Oregon through northern California, northeastern Nevada, central Utah, northeastern Arizona, southwest Colorado, central New Mexico and southern Texas.

It will then move across the Gulf of Mexico and traverse Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia and Brazil.

The eclipse’s greatest point can be seen for 5 minutes, 17 seconds. This rare event will occur off the coast of Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Meanwhile, the most beautiful places to see the solar eclipse of the ring of fire are in the southwest US and at the Mayan temple in Edzná, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico.

If one wants to see this event, one must use a solar filter at all times. Whether a partial solar eclipse or annular solar eclipse, the danger remains the same.

A ring of fire solar eclipse is technically nothing more than a partial solar eclipse because no more than 91% of the Sun’s disk will be covered by the new Moon. Observing this phenomenon must wear solar eclipse glasses, cameras, telescopes, and binoculars that have a solar filter in front of the lens.

After the ring of fire eclipse on October 14, 2023, the next annular eclipse will occur on October 2, 2024, when the ring of fire is visible from the Pacific Ocean, southern Chile, and southern Argentina.
