The Challenges of Mined Areas and Lack of Aviation in Ukraine’s Military Counteroffensive

A huge number of mined areas and the lack of aviation complicate the task of our military.

The counteroffensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is advancing, but slowly. Ukraine received less than a hundred Western tanks, but the Russians are actively producing new units.

This was written by a military analyst BILD Julian Repke.

“The United States does not transfer F-16s, and Germany does not transfer long-range Taurus missiles”

As Repke notes, 10 weeks have already passed since the beginning of the counter-offensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

“Ukraine and its partners were too optimistic, and I must admit that I myself was too,” said Nico Lange, former head of the operational headquarters of the German Defense Ministry.

According to him, breakthroughs due to huge minefields and the advantage of the Russians in the air make the task extremely difficult. Consequently, the Ukrainian counter-offensive is advancing, but very slowly.

“The best thing we can do is to prepare for long-term and systemic support for Ukraine. Unfortunately, we are still lagging behind in realizing the chancellor’s promises. For example, because we worked too long on the supply of armored personnel carriers and tanks, the Russians had time to create huge fields and defensive positions,” Lange stated.

Repke considers this assessment to be correct. He recalls that the United States still refuses to transfer F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, and Germany – long-range Taurus cruise missiles. The expert notes that as of today, less than 100 modern Western tanks have been delivered to Kyiv. At the same time, Russia produces about 50 new tanks every month, and their total number in the RF Armed Forces exceeds 10,000.

Earlier, ISW noted that the counter-offensive actions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are forcing the occupying army of the Russian Federation to redeploy its defending forces in the western part of the Zaporozhye region, where it was weakened by Ukrainian defenders. Due to such degradation of the forces of the Russian Army, an opportunity is created for any breakthrough of the Ukrainian defense forces, which can be decisive.
