In the center of Tiel in Gelderland this afternoon there was another stinking smell. This was also the case yesterday: parts of the city center were closed to the public, because it was unclear whether the air was dangerous to public health.
Later in the day it became clear that it was tetrahydrothiophene (THT), a substance that is added to natural gas to give it its characteristic smell. The stuff smells bad, but is absolutely harmless, according to the safety region.
This afternoon the scent was smelled near the Flipje and Regional Museum. There was also an odor nuisance in the museum, reports Broadcasting Gelderland. According to the security region, it was again THT.
The fire brigade tried to reduce the smell with water jets. Furthermore, part of the sewer was flushed again.
Cause unknown
“The smell has now decreased again, but we still do not know what causes the smell,” the Gelderland-South Security Region reported tonight. The service is investigating the cause of the odor nuisance. Just like yesterday, it is unknown how the smell could spread.
Residents and visitors to the center who notice that the stench is spreading further or getting worse are urged to call 112.
