The Impact of Increased Blood Sugar Levels on Heart and Blood Vessel Disease

REPUBLIC. CO.ID, JAKAR — Rate increase blood sugar above normal is often associated with risk diabetes type 2. In addition to diabetes, increased blood sugar levels can actually affect the health of the heart and blood vessels.

Impact of increased blood sugar levels on risk heart disease and these blood vessels were disclosed in a study published in The Lancet Regional Health. The study was led by a team of researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and University College London (UCL).

This study revealed that blood sugar levels above normal can increase the risk of heart disease and blood vessels by 30-50 percent. This increased risk still occurs even though the increase in blood sugar levels that occur has not yet reached the threshold of diabetes.

An increased risk of heart and blood vessel disease due to blood sugar levels above normal can occur in men and women. However, women tend to experience a higher increased risk than men.

In comparison, men with blood sugar levels above normal but below the threshold for diabetes have a 30 percent higher risk of heart and blood vessel disease. Whereas in women, the increased risk reaches a range of 30-50 percent.

Conversely, individuals with normal blood sugar levels tend to have a lower risk of heart and blood vessel disease. That is, people with normal blood sugar levels are more protected from the risk of heart attack and stroke.

“(The risk of heart and blood vessel disease) is not only limited to individuals diagnosed with diabetes, but also to men and women who have prediabetes,” said the head of the research team from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), Dr. Christopher Rentsch, as reported by the Independently page ndependenton Sunday (13/8).

Prediabetes is a condition when blood sugar levels are above normal. However, the blood sugar level is not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes.

This latest study was carried out by a team of researchers from LSHTM and University College London or UCL. The findings in this study have been published in the journall The Lancet Regional Health – Europe.

“This study supports the existence of cardiovascular risk assessment strategies in people who are obese, including measuring blood sugar levels, cholesterol, and blood pressure,” said professor in the field of cardiology from the University of Sheffield, Robert Storey.

Prof. Storey revealed that blood sugar levels, cholesterol, and high blood pressure above normal are risk factors for heart and blood vessel disease. If all three can be managed properly, the risk of cardiovascular disease in the future can be reduced.

There are various efforts that can be made to manage these risk factors for heart and blood vessel disease. Some of them are losing excess weight, improving diet, and using drugs when needed.
