In the history of Chinese feudalism, fighting for favors, fighting jealousy… was inherently a common thing because each emperor had many concubines that everyone wanted to capture the king’s heart. But there are queens who fight with jealousy so cruelly that it frightens their husbands and children, condemns them… This series of articles will “take a look at” the most feared jealous queens in the history of feudal China.
Queen Doc Co because of her worship of monogamy, even willingly abolished the eldest son, made the second child crown prince because the eldest son married a concubine and gave birth to children, contrary to her teachings. When she discovered that her husband was sneaking back and forth with “small tam”, she was extremely angry, immediately led the person to fight jealousy, kill the woman who destroyed her family’s happiness.
Perfect talent, help her husband win the world
Empress Doc Co, also known as Empress Van Hien, was the only empress of Emperor Duong Kien of Sui Van, the first king of the Sui dynasty in Chinese feudal history.
She had a prestigious birth as the daughter of Doc Co Tin, a founding god of the Northern Zhou Dynasty.
Empress Doc Co is famous for her talent and integrity. In her youth, she once made Emperor Van De fall in love and affection, vowing to only love her for a lifetime, not to be close to any other women.
Therefore, Van De’s 5 sons and 5 daughters were born by Queen Doc Co, proving the deep affection of the couple.
As an educated person, Queen Doc Co was also an effective way to help Duong Kien establish a career.
History books record that, in 580, Northern Zhou Xuan Emperor died after ceding the throne to his son Northern Zhou Jing.
Duong Kien at that time was still the Duke of Sui, gradually gaining power in the court. At this time, Doc Co often advised her husband to take the opportunity to claim the throne.
Accordingly, in 581, Duong Kien defeated the general Uat Tri Quynh and forced the Northern Chu Tinh Emperor to cede the throne to him, establishing the Sui dynasty.
In the same year, Emperor Sui ordained Dugu as empress, then made her eldest son Duong Dung crown prince, the other children were crowned kings.
Due to her talent in governing the country, Empress Doc Co was highly respected by Emperor Sui. He often discussed water affairs with her. When Emperor Wen discussed political affairs with the ministers, Du Co was allowed to stand close to listen and interfere in her husband’s decisions.
She is said to be a benevolent person who loves people like her children. Once, the Tu Quyet people (a nomadic country formed by nomadic peoples allied with each other, under the control of the Sui dynasty) offered the Sui Minh Chau with a value of 800,000 taels of gold. This pearl is offered to Queen Doc Co.
However, she thought that the soldiers outside the border had to fight hard and arduously, so she exchanged the pearls for silver for them. Therefore, during the court, the great ministers often called Emperor Sui Van and Empress Doc Co as the second saint.
Worshiping monogamy, forbidding husbands to be close to concubines
Promoting monogamy, in the palace, Doc Co forbade Van De from being close to his concubines. Even under the queen’s grip, the concubines didn’t even have the opportunity to see Emperor Wen, but did not dare to think of being graced.
She also encouraged the ministers to follow the “monogamy” regime, or should only have children with the first wife, only when the first wife died, she could marry and have children with the new wife.
Empress Doc Co believes that making a concubine is a disaster for the family and society. According to her, when a man has “five wives and seven concubines”, it is inevitable that discord arises in the family. This will also cause the king and the officials to spend a lot of effort on the family. So where is the time to focus on national affairs?
Especially for the emperor, if he fell into having fun with the beautiful women in the three palaces, where would he have the strength to take care of the kingdom and the world?
Accordingly, right after being ordained as Empress, Doc Co asked Emperor Van Di not to indulge in sexual desires, convincing officials and people to give up polygamy.
She even persuaded the King of Sui to introduce punishment such as demobilization or dismissal for officials whose wives had not yet died but married other wives and had children.
Even her eldest son – Crown Prince Duong Dung – married a concubine and gave birth to her children, expressing dissatisfaction.
Since then, she gradually hated Duong Dung, transferring all her love to her second son, Duong Quang.
When the first wife of the crown prince named Nguyen Thi suddenly died in 591, Doc Co suspected that it was poisoned by Duong Dung’s concubine Van Chieu Huan. Therefore, she killed Van Chieu Huan and incited Emperor Sui to depose Duong Dung and make Duong Quang crown prince.
However, Queen Doc Co did not expect that the second son, because he wanted to take the throne, pretended to be filial and shunned his concubine to win her heart. Duong Quang later ascended the throne, becoming Emperor Sui Yang.
The cruel jealousy beat, causing her husband to leave resentfully
Although the couple’s relationship between Empress Doc Co and Emperor Sui Van was praised by the people as fervent and faithful, in the last years of their lives, they began to develop rifts, discord and even failed to achieve peace. until both are dead.
The source of the discord came from the fact that Empress Doc Co had too much respect for monogamy and culminated in the fact that she led people to fight with jealousy and beat to death the maidservant who was graced by Emperor Wen for one night.
Specifically, once, taking the opportunity to take advantage of Empress Doc Co’s illness, Emperor Sui immediately led the inner city to sneak to visit the three palaces. Arriving at the Palace of Life, a young palace maid named Uat Tri saw Emperor Wen and bowed her head in fear. But seeing the beautiful, youthful beauty of Uat Tri, the heart of Emperor Van lost his rhythm and ended up spending the night with the beauty.
The Queen of Solitude was very angry when she heard about it. On the occasion of Emperor Wen’s departure, she personally went to the Palace of Life, sent someone to beat him to death despite the “small tam” crying and begging for forgiveness. Sui Van De heard the news and was very angry, but because he was afraid of his wife, he could do nothing but ride a horse to go to the mountain to relieve his sorrow, not caring about water or household chores.
When the courtiers came to him, Emperor Sui immediately lamented: “The empress acts arrogant, domineering, the desire to control is too great. I am a heavenly son, but I am not free! Is there any emperor as miserable as I am?”
It was not until Empress Doc Co sent two great ministers, Cao Quynh and Duong To, to the mountain to persuade, that Emperor Van De returned to the palace and reconciled with his wife. However, the two queens could not return to the same state of intimacy as before. Although Doc Co was able to kill the minor tam, since then, she has lost her husband’s love.
Not long after that, Queen Du Co became seriously ill and died, at the age of 59. Emperor Van escaped from the grip, immediately married 2 more concubines in 1 day.
However, Van De was at the age of 60 at that time, and was too happy with the beauty, so only 2 years later the king also returned to the place where the nine streams reunited with Queen Doc.
