CANOGA PARK, LOS ANGELES - In a shocking incident captured on video, a mob-style smash-and-grab robbery took place at the Nordstrom store inside Westfield Topanga Mall on Saturday. Police are now on the hunt for up to 30 suspects involved in the brazen crime.
The incident occurred around 4:15 p.m. when a large group of suspects stormed the store, smashing display cases, grabbing merchandise, and making a swift exit. An Instagram user shared the video, which shows the chaotic scene unfold.
During the robbery, a security guard at the store was sprayed with either Mace pepper spray or bear spray. The suspects, numbering between 20 to 30, quickly fled the scene in several vehicles, including a BMW, a Lexus, and a Honda, according to the police.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic and confusing. “I really didn’t understand at first what was going on, and then I recognized what was really happening when all the security… everybody was going to the one area,” said one witness.
Investigators estimate that the group made off with merchandise worth between $60,000 and $100,000. Another witness, who was sitting at a nearby coffee shop, recounted the moment they saw a swarm of people running out of the store. “We were not in the store. We were at the entry of the store… so many people coming out,” they said.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass expressed her outrage at the incident, stating, “What happened today at the Nordstrom in the Topanga Mall is absolutely unacceptable. Those who committed these acts and acts like it in neighboring areas must be held accountable.” Mayor Bass assured the public that the Los Angeles Police Department is committed to finding the culprits and preventing similar attacks on retailers in the future.
