The purpose of celebrating this day is to raise awareness among people about the need for organ donation. Along with this, people have to be encouraged to donate organs after death. Actually, organ donation is a gift given in the form of an organ to such a person, whose organ disease is in the last stage and who needs a transplant. In such a situation, the person who donates his organ is called ‘Organ Donor’, while the person receiving the organ is called ‘Recipient’. These organ donations play an important role in saving the life of the recipient in most of the cases. Why is organ donation necessary?

According to experts, the organ donation rate is higher in foreign countries than in India. One of the major reasons for this is lack of awareness and information. Actually, when you donate any part of your body, it helps the recipients to live a long life. Donated organs can save a person’s life. Although transplantation is possible only when a person donates his organ to someone. Tell that, with the help of eye and tissue, one organ donor can save the lives of about 7 people. For this process, the donor has to register on the organ donation site while he is alive. So that the family members can give consent to donate organs and tissues after death.

Which organs and tissues can be transplanted?

Dr. Kuldeep Kumar says, many human organs and tissues can be transplanted from the donor to the recipient. These include liver, kidney, pancreas, heart, lung, intestine, cornea, bone marrow and vascularized composite allografts, such as skin, uterus, bone, muscles, nerves and connective tissues, etc. This donated organs helps in saving the life of the recipient.

Who can donate organs and what are the methods?

Circulatory Death: In this, the work of circulation stops after a heart attack. In such a situation, that person cannot be revived or activated. This may also happen when life-sustaining treatments are discontinued within the intensive care unit or emergency department when the patient is no longer expected to recover. In case of circulatory death, the patient is closely monitored and organ donation takes place only when the circulation stops beyond repair. In such a situation, in a very short time, his family members can donate the organs of that person if they wish.

brain death In this case, the supply of blood to the brain stem stops due to infarct/bleeding/trauma. The brain itself controls the vital centers of the body. In this the person loses the ability to breathe or remain alert. There is a difference between brain death and coma. In a coma, the brain can be injured, but it has the potential to repair itself. However, in case of brain death, there is no possibility of recovery and the brain is not able to function again. In such cases the person is declared brain dead and if his family wishes, his organs can be donated to the needy.

Living Donation: The above two types of donation are for after the death of the person, while living donation can be done while the person is alive. A person can donate a kidney, a small part of a liver, or a bone that is not used after hip or knee replacement, to his family or someone in need.

Who cannot donate organs?

Some people in the medical field are also prohibited from donating organs. These include those people who are suffering from some serious illness. These diseases include cancer, HIV, infection or intravenous (IV) and asthma. However, even then one can register himself as a donor if he so desires. Because at the time of death, a detailed evaluation is done whether the organ is suitable for transplant or not.
