Ukrainian border guards put up a new banner on Snake Island on Saturday, reminiscent of what happened in the first hours of the start of the Russian military operation when one of the guards of the strategic Black Sea island used a phrase to refuse to surrender to a warship.
In a video clip on Facebook transmitted by the commander of the border guards, Serhiy Daineko, a man in military uniform appears in front of a blue and yellow pole that symbolizes the Ukrainian flag and says, “The next border sign will be installed in Crimea after the Ukrainian defense forces liberate it.”
And the small snake island became a symbol of the Ukrainian resistance in the early hours of the start of the Russian military operation on February 24, 2022, when Russian officers aboard the warship Moskva of the Black Sea Fleet sent a message by radio to the Ukrainian guards stationed there, ordering them to surrender or die.
One replied to the message, “Go to hell with the Russian warship.”
Information about the strategic Snake Island
The island is a small protuberance, with an area of 0.17 square kilometres, and a length of 662 meters and a width of 440 meters, the highest point of which is about 41 meters high. The island is located in a strategic location in the Black Sea off the coasts of Ukraine and Romania. It is named so because white snakes live in it. In its military operation, the Russian army represented “the main security gate and the key to controlling the Black Sea.” Control of “Snake Island” will prevent it from becoming a launching pad for missiles at Russian forces or Moscow’s warships. The strategic island overlooks the sea lanes leading to Odessa, Ukraine’s main port on the Black Sea. On April 14, two Ukrainian missiles hit the Moskva, the largest warship sunk in a military operation in 40 years. Russia says one of its sailors died in an accident, while Western experts say they believe half the crew of about 450 perished at sea. On June 30, Russia abandoned the island after it suffered heavy losses trying to defend it, and described its withdrawal as “another gesture of goodwill.”
