Ajax wants to pluck successor to Edson Álvarez from the Bundesliga

Ajax has again shown interest in Ilia Gruev, Kicker reported on Saturday evening. The 23-year-old defensive midfielder of Werder Bremen, who is still committed there until mid-2025, should become the direct successor to Edson Álvarez. The Bulgarian was no longer part of the party on Saturday in the 3-2 loss for the DFB-Pokal with Viktoria Köln.
Gruev is not an unknown name in the Johan Cruijff ArenA. The eight-time international from Bulgaria has been on the list at Ajax for a long time, but it has still struck to date. In June 2022, BILD already reported that Ajax was after the Eastern European. A year later, Gruev is still playing for Werder, although that is expected to end this summer. In addition to Ajax, clubs from the Bundesliga, England and Italy have also shown interest in Gruev. However, the Amsterdammers seem to be the most concrete at the moment.

At Ajax, Gruev should succeed Álvarez, who left the club this summer after four years for an adventure at West Ham United. The 1.85 meter tall Gruev, who also has German nationality in addition to Bulgarian nationality, has so far played 61 matches for Werder Bremen’s main force. Previously he also went through the youth academy there. The Sofia-born midfielder should compete in Amsterdam with, among others, Benjamin Tahirovic and Branco van den Boomen, who formed the block behind number 10 Kenneth Taylor against Heracles Almelo on Saturday.
