South Hampton is a suburb of Chicago, in the northern tip of the state of Illinois. Alcohol was banned until now due to the religious nature of the place.
Rules relaxed
The rules in South Holland have recently been relaxed. Alcohol licenses can now be issued, provided that the alcohol is only ordered in combination with food. Pubs and liquor stores are therefore not yet getting the green light.
The ban on alcohol sales led to many discussions between church leaders, entrepreneurs and community organizations. With the relaxation, a long-cherished wish of a large part of the inhabitants is being fulfilled. Until now, they had to go to the surrounding cities for a drink.
Anxious
The religious inhabitants of South Holland are not happy with the approaching alcohol sales. Local church pastor Melvin L. Moore: “Some people are anxious about what the future holds. Some see the congregations around us and how they’ve changed,” he told ABC 7 Chicago, a local broadcaster.
According to him, South Holland has always been a safe and religious village. Moore fears that will now change.
The mayor of the town is less concerned. “With this move, we look forward to a bright future of progress and development, but do it in a way that remains steadfast to our longstanding values of faith and family.”
“The prevailing feeling is that we can change what we do without changing who we are,” the mayor continued.
20,000 inhabitants
South Holland officially became a municipality in 1894, after Dutch immigrants from South Holland settled there in 1846.
The village now has more than 20,000 inhabitants.
