Armenia Urgently Appeals to UN Security Council Over Humanitarian Crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh

Armenia called on the UN Security Council to hold an emergency meeting regarding the worsening humanitarian situation in the Azerbaijani region of Nagorno-Karabakh, which is populated mainly by Armenians, the Associated Press reported, BTA reported.

In a letter to the President of the UN Security Council, distributed today by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, its permanent representative to the world organization stated that the population of Nagorno-Karabakh is “on the verge of a complete humanitarian catastrophe”.

Since December last year, Azerbaijan has blocked the only road leading from Armenia to Nagorno-Karabakh, severely limiting the supply of food, medical supplies and other essential goods to the region, home to about 120,000 people.

Armenia is making the appeal after the former chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court warned on Tuesday that Azerbaijan was preparing genocide against ethnic Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh and called on the UN Security Council to refer the matter to the international tribunal.
