Perseids Meteor Shower: Watch the Spectacular Sky Event This Weekend

Watch the sky this morning

There are those who call them “Tears of São Lourenço”, but specialists prefer to name them Perseidas. If you’re into stargazing, you’re in for a treat, as the most popular and best meteor shower of the year is expected to peak this weekend.

The Perseids are most visible in the northern hemisphere. The light show will cross the sky between August 12th and 13th, that is, on the night of Saturday to Sunday. Experts say the ideal time to observe the phenomenon will be between two and three in the morning.

“Peak visibility is predicted for the night of Saturday to Sunday, but if someone wants to see them on the night of Sunday to Monday, it will probably still be pretty good,” said Derek Smale, NASA program director, quoted by the The Guardian.

Contrary to what happened the previous year, when the Perseids coincided with the full moon, this time the moon will be in a crescent phase. This means that the skies will naturally be darker, providing perfect conditions for watching the star shower.

Even so, to better enjoy the moment, escape the bright lights of the cities, put your cell phone away and look for a high point with visibility.

The Perseids arise when the Earth passes through dust blown off comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, which has an orbit with a period of 133 years.

According to NASA, during “the rain” up to 100 meteors can be seen crossing the sky per hour.
