Record Number of Migrants Crossing the English Channel: Rescue Operations by French and British Ships

Three French ships, a helicopter, an airplane and two British ships are participating in the rescue operations.

Since the counting of migrants crossing the English Channel from France to southeast England in small boats began in 2018, their number has exceeded 100,000, according to official data published on Friday.

French authorities have stepped up patrols and other measures after London agreed in March to pay hundreds of millions of euros a year to stem the flow of migrants.

On Thursday, “Premar” reported the rescue of 116 migrants from three different boats, but the British Home Office informed that 755 migrants tried to cross the English Channel in 14 different boats, which is the largest number of migrants registered in one day this year.

This year, a total of almost 16,000 migrants have crossed the English Channel in boats.

Last year, five migrants died and four went missing while trying to cross the English Channel from France.

In November 2021, 27 migrants lost their lives when a boat overturned in the English Channel.
