Italy’s Minister Urso Responds to Ryanair’s Threat to Cut Routes

Minister Urso intervenes again on the expensive flight and replies to Ryanair, which threatens to cut some routes. “Italy is the company’s first market, the most attractive in Europe. If they cut routes, someone else will fill them,” says Urso.

The tone between the government and Ryanair does not subside. After the Irish low-cost company had said it was ready to cut some routes if the new rules were not withdrawn, the reply came from the Minister of Enterprise, Adolfo Urso, who had announced the provision a few days ago at a press conference. “Wilson does what he thinks. Italy is the company’s first market, the most attractive in Europe. If they cut routes, someone else will fill them. I just wonder if Ryanair shareholders are of the same opinion“, he said in an interview with La Stampa.

To then add that Ryanair has been doing for years “what he wanted” on the Italian market, but what is the situation now “must change” Why “when tickets for a thousand euros are put on sale in conjunction with flood events, the market has nothing to do with it, it’s called speculation“.

In the meantime, the European Union has also asked Italy for some clarifications on the provision and on the tightening of tariffs for Sicily and Sardinia. The CEO of Ryanair, Eddie Wilson, had just said that the law “interfered with the laws of the free market according to the rules of the European Union“. Brussels is allegedly having contacts with the Italian authorities in these hours, waiting for “receive more detailed information about the precise content“. From the ministry they explain that it is a request “completely physiological that falls within the normal technical dialogue“.

What the government has decided against expensive flights: the measures of the Omnibus decree

In any case, a new meeting between Urso and the airline representatives will be held in September. Indeed, after the meeting with Wilson, the minister said he was available for new discussions to seek a solution together with sector operators. In any case, on the issue, there has also been criticism from the opposition, according to which it is now too late for a solution since those who could afford it have already gone on vacation and the peak has now passed. Or it certainly will be in September, when the new meetings are scheduled.
