Colombian authorities have arrested the father of two of four Colombian children who survived 40 days in the Amazon rainforest after a plane crash in May and June. Media in the South American country report this on Friday. Father Manuel Ranoque would be suspected of sexual abuse.
According to the authoritative Colombian weekly Semana, the suspicion dates back to before the fatal May 1 crash, when the children – aged 13, 9 and 4 years and 11 months – survived a plane crash and roamed the rainforest in the San José del Guaviare region for 40 days , in South Colombia. They were found after a massive search by, among others, the Colombian army.
Before the fatal accident, Ranoque’s partner Magdalena Mucutuy Valencia, who died in the crash, reported him for sexually abusing 13-year-old Lesly, the eldest of her four children. Two weeks ago, the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare (LCBF) also allegedly banned Ranoque and people from his immediate social environment from coming near the children.
Lesly and her 9-year-old sister Soleiny are daughters from Mucutuy’s previous relationship. Their half-brothers, the four-year-old Tien Norel and the now just over a year old baby Cristin, are sons from her relationship with Ranoque.
Damage claim
The arrest is not entirely surprising. In the weeks after the children were found, many stories were circulating in Colombia about the abuse and sexual abuse of one or more children by Ranoque. For example, 33-year-old Mucutuy is said to have fled their village twice with her children for fear of domestic violence.
Mucutuy’s parents have been trying to get custody of them through the courts since their grandchildren were found alive. Ranoque opposes this.
However, according to Semana, the Colombian authorities have not released many details about the case, because the laws in the country do not allow it if there are minor victims of a possible crime.
The arrest comes less than a month after Ranoque filed a claim for damages with the airline company that managed the crashed plane. Among other things, he would demand compensation for the loss of his partner and the temporary loss of his children.
