With rising prices, Belgians pay more attention to their money, but that does not mean that they can no longer afford anything in addition to their monthly expenses. Here are the cities where the most money is spent each month.
The news: Antwerp and Liège top the list of Belgian cities where the population spends the most money in relation to the minimum wage – excluding rent – according to a study by the financial comparison platform HelloSafe.
Antwerp residents thus spend the equivalent of 66.7% of the Belgian net minimum wage, namely €1,370.56 (€1,955 gross), on groceries, bills, recreation and transport, which amounts to approximately €915. In the heart of the “City of Fire”, the inhabitants of Liège spend the equivalent of 64%, or €879.5. Liège is the Walloon city where the average monthly household budget is the highest. On the opposite side we find Bruges. The Flemish city is the place where the least extra is spent, with 54.7% of the net minimum wage excluding rent (€750).
Remarkable: These expenses include both basic needs such as bills, food, transportation costs and extras such as recreation, clothing purchases and restaurants. In addition, the rental amounts must be added, which can vary greatly depending on the cities.
Food represents on average 30.4% of Belgians’ income. It is the highest expenditure item. Rent is in second place with 23.8% of Belgians’ monthly expenses.
Everyone has priorities
In addition, the results of this report only give a glimpse of the spending pattern of Belgians and the budget they can spend each month after paying their rent – the average amount for all types of accommodation together amounted to €759 in 2022. But each individual’s actual expenses also vary greatly depending on a variety of factors, including actual salary, rent, costs, but most importantly, personal priorities. (kg)
