The US Attorney General has given a prosecutor in the Hunter Biden investigation the status of “special prosecutor”. The son of the US president is charged with tax crimes and violating the gun law.
David Weiss, the Trump-appointed prosecutor investigating Hunter Biden, will have more powers than a normal federal prosecutor with the special status. He can operate more independently and is less concerned with the usual hierarchy.
It is a new twist in the long-running criminal investigation into Hunter Biden. That investigation seemed to come to an end when a settlement was announced in June. As a result, Hunter Biden would avoid a lawsuit. He intended to plead guilty to two tax violations.
In addition, there was an indictment for the fact that he had bought a firearm in 2018 without saying that he was a drug addict. Therefore, the purchase was a crime. Prosecutors would drop that charge in two years if Hunter Biden stayed out of trouble and passed a drug test.
Impasse
However, a judge did not agree with the settlement. She demanded that the defense and justice meet again to clarify the terms of the deal, and to limit the partial immunity offered to the younger Biden. Those new negotiations ended in an impasse, after which the American Public Prosecution Service announced that it would still come to a lawsuit.
Democrats have long been concerned about whether Biden’s son will pose a problem for President Biden’s re-election campaign.
Republicans have for years accused Hunter of using his father’s political power for personal gain in his business activities in Ukraine and China. There was also harsh criticism of the proposed settlement in June from that quarter. The Republicans thought that the president’s son got off too easily.
Later this week, Nieuwsuur will devote extensive attention in a report to the investigation into Hunter Biden, and the problems it can cause for the sitting president.
