Ministry of Social Affairs Supports Debt Counseling Pilot Project for Families in Freiburg and Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald

The Ministry of Social Affairs supports a pilot project in the city of Freiburg and in the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald in the area of debt counseling for families. This is to test how quick help can be achieved.

The Social Service for Catholic Women in Freiburg (SKF) received a grant of 80,000 euros for the project “Social Debt Counseling: Avoiding Over-Indebtedness in Families, Identifying It Early and Dealing With It Effectively”. This was announced by the green members of the state parliament Daniela Evers, Nadyne Saint-Cast and Reinhold Pix. The project supplements the existing debt counseling in the SKF Family Competence Center with preventive elements for families who have not yet found their way to debt counseling. In addition, the expertise of professionals working with families is included in order to also take into account the psychosocial effects of financial problems.

The Diakonisches Werk Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald received 73,000 euros for the “Financial Compass for Families”. This should enable families in precarious living situations to stabilize their financial situation. The support program supports families in applying for benefits, the statement says. Debt counseling and insolvency advice worked more closely together with the help of digital formats in order to provide the affected families with good support in their insolvency proceedings. Specialists in socio-pedagogical family support should also be sensitized and empowered to recognize over-indebtedness at an early stage and to organize help.
