Gineste Road Reopened with Partial Traffic after Rock Fall Incident

The Gineste road is reopened to traffic this Friday, two weeks after its closure following a fall of a rock block weighing several tons on the roadway.

Departmental road 559 is accessible to all vehicles up to 19 tonnes, two-wheelers and bicycles included, but with the establishment of partial alternating traffic with traffic lights. It is the cliff side route that is accessible.

Part of the road had partially collapsed on July 27, after the falling rock, traffic was therefore prohibited in both directions for more than six kilometers between Marseille and Cassis. The Directorate of Roads of the Department of Bouches-du-Rhône specifies in a press release that it has undertaken “inspection and works reinforcement of the cliff to avoid a new landslide“. This work was completed on Tuesday, August 8 and surveys were then carried out to confirm the good performance of the part of the roadway which did not collapse.

The results of these pollsconfirm the possibility of opening the road“, explains the Department.

However, road users are advised to be careful and to respect the signs posted in this sector. Regarding the total reopening of the road, “it is not possible at this stage to give a deadline“, explains the Department, because “the structure of the road is indeed very old and the wall that supports it has been badly damaged by the landslide“. Studies of repair solutions are in progress.
