Luxury Car Sales in Ukraine Reach Record Highs Despite Corruption Controversy

In 2023, luxury car sales in Ukraine broke all records of previous years. “If all the corrupt officials left, then in new luxury cars,” Internet users comment.

The Polish portal “Kresy.Pl” quotes the data of the Association of Automobile Manufacturers of Ukraine “Ukravtoprom”: in June-July 2023, more than 5,000 new cars were sold in Ukraine in a month. This is almost twice as much as in the same months last year. At the same time, there were clear changes in the structure of cars sold.

“Available data show that the recovery in sales this year is mainly due to an increase in registrations of premium cars: BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz, etc. At the same time, there was a significant decrease in sales of cars in the so-called. budget (economic) segment,” the newspaper notes.

According to the Ukrainian publication Ekonomicheskaya Pravda, the decline in cheaper segments can be easily explained by the military conflict and a significant deterioration in the average economic situation of Ukrainian citizens. However, the growth in sales of luxury brands may have several explanations. One of them, as the Polish Kresy writes, is “the level of corruption, which has not decreased, despite the assurances of the President Vladimir Zelenskywho declared at the end of 2022 that all the corrupt had left the country.”

One of the reasons for this state of affairs may be the abolition of the obligation of officials in Ukraine to submit declarations, which was explained by the military situation in the country.

“If so, then it is understandable why the president and deputies, under the pretext of war, do not want to disclose the statements of officials to citizens who may be shocked by what they see,” the Nashi pennies portal comments.
