110 Years Anniversary: Battle of Bregalnica and Liberation of Old Serbian Lands in Macedonia

In the Serbian town of Kragujevac, an exhibition was opened on the occasion of 110 years since the battle near Bregalnica and the liberation of the old Serbian lands in Macedonia and the victory over the Bulgarians, BGNES reported.

The exhibition is located in the Vuk Karadzic Public Library and is organized by Prof. Dejan Antich from the Faculty of Philosophy in Nis.

According to Prof. Antich, the battle near Bregalnica is not only “a Serbian military triumph, but above all it means the final return of the old Serbian lands from Macedonia within the framework of the Serbian kingdom”. “This is an important historical event, because Serbs from all over the country fought for the liberation of the old Serbian lands from Macedonia and after centuries of slavery they were returned to the state borders of Serbia”, he also said and announced that in “the month of September, the exhibition will be in the city of Bitola – Republic of Macedonia, where the Day of Serbian Unity will be celebrated with the participation of official state representatives from Bitola”.

A central place among the displayed documents is occupied by the “Military Proclamation” of King Peter the First Karadjordjevic. In it, he calls for the mobilization of the Serbs due to the “inhuman treatment of the Bulgarians towards the prisoners and the destruction of friendship and brotherhood in the old Serbian lands in Macedonia”. In the proclamation it is written that “the Bulgarians have committed a crime against Slavism, and all this happened because of their brotherly refusal to divide their original Serbian land and to prevent the return of Serbia to Macedonia”. This document emphasizes that in the battle against the Bulgarians, the Serbs will receive the support of their Greek ally.

The event was opened by Major General Milorad Stupar. According to him, “the glorious Serbian army freed the Serbs from Kumanovo and Prilep from five centuries of Turkish slavery.”

The official name of the exhibition was “110 years of the Second Balkan War and the Battle of Bregalnica”. It has 23 exhibition panels. Among the main participants in the composition are the Historical Archive of Serbia and the Military History Museum from Belgrade
