For several seasons, coaches in the NHL have been able to use the coach’s challenge, which is simply about being able to challenge the decision in the match.
It has been underway in the SHL and the original plan was to implement the system for this year’s 23/24 season. However, that will not happen.
– We were quite far ahead in these thoughts, but all 14 clubs thought it worked very well as it is now. They wanted to continue, says SHL sports director Johan Hemlin.

There is also a technical and financial aspect that comes with the system. The SHL has therefore chosen to wait.
– There is quite a lot of technology that needs to be put in place in order to have a full-fledged coach’s challenge, which is why we chose to stay for another year. We take an evaluation before 24/25.
Is the goal to follow in the NHL’s footsteps with this?
– I don’t want to say it fully. However, the video and the whole system are coming more and more. But I’m not sure we’ll take the plunge fully.
Hemlin cannot answer when the coach’s challenge will become commonplace in the SHL.
– We can push it through if we want, but it feels stupid if 14 clubs think it works very well as it is.
