France Implements Mandatory Vaccinations for Farmed Ducks to Fight Bird Flu

Violina Gorcinschi – 11 August 2023 15:07 France fights the bird flu virus through mandatory vaccinations

The French Ministry of Agriculture has initiated a campaign to immunize farmed bird populations. Vaccination will be mandatory for all duck breeding units in the territory of the French state, as a measure to prevent the spread of the bird flu virus. The inoculation will be carried out by administering two doses of the vaccine that has already obtained positive results in animal tests.

France wants to immunize all flocks of ducks raised for economic purposes, starting on October 1. Farmers will be obliged to allow the authorities to vaccinate all their ducks, and the costs for this procedure will be borne by the state in proportion to 85%. The vaccine in question is produced by a German company, he reported agro.bg.

Vaccination will be mandatory in duck farms

Starting on October 1, France will initiate a campaign to mass-immunize farmed ducks against bird flu. This measure follows the positive results of vaccine testing processes.

Following the experiments, the French Ministry of Agriculture developed a special strategy and purchased 80 million doses of the vaccine from a German manufacturer. Vaccination will be mandatory for all duck farms, with each bird receiving two doses.

The financing and control costs are covered 85% by the government and the rest will be paid by the farmers. The strategy also includes other preventive measures to limit the spread of the virus as much as possible, including reducing duck populations in certain regions.

The implementation of the campaign, announced at the end of last year, has been under discussion for some time after a French pharmaceutical company contested in court the authorities’ decision to purchase the German vaccine. The firm, which also developed the substance, insisted that the order be split between at least two manufacturers to reduce the risk.

A day ago, however, the French company withdrew its claim, arguing that it wanted to protect the interests of farmers and the poultry sector in the country. It will continue to produce its own vaccine, with 10 million doses already available. There are indications from the Ministry of Agriculture that a new public order for a large amount of vaccines is coming.
