Jerichow (dpa/sa) – Northern Germany’s oldest brick building is the stage and backdrop for international jazz musicians and their art. After the opening of the “Jazz in Jerichow Monastery” festival on Friday, concerts by established jazz greats and young musicians are on the program until Sunday. The first evening will be performed by the Daniel Garcia Trio from Madrid, young pianist Johanna Summer and the Oli Bott Trio, who want to inspire with performances on the vibraphone. According to the Saxony-Anhalt Cultural Foundation, the state youth big band is expected on Saturday, and on Sunday there will be a jazz service with Sarah Kaiser and the Tangermünde trombone and wind choir. The “Jazz im Kloster Jerichow” series is taking place for the fifth time, it said.
The monastery complex near Magdeburg has belonged to the Saxony-Anhalt Cultural Foundation since the beginning of 2022. According to them, more than 30 brick churches were built in Jerichower Land in the 12th and 13th centuries. Jerichow Monastery with its collegiate church of St. Mary and St. Nicholas is a monument on the Romanesque Road. It was founded in 1144 as a Premonstratensian monastery and moved to its current location outside of Jerichow in 1148. A year later the construction of the collegiate church began.
