Controversy Surrounding Kristin Harilla’s Record-Breaking Climb on Mount K2 Raises Questions

Jakarta

Mount K2 in Pakistan the terrain is very difficult, even considered heavier than Everest. Even the height, 8,849 meters, only lost to Everest. So when Kristin Harilla was able to beat him and break a record, he was initially admired. However, it is suspected that there is a scandal behind it.

Kristin from Norway and the team on July 27 set a record for being the fastest to reach the top of a mountain with an altitude above 8,000 meters, including K2. During the ascent, porter Mohammed Hassan fell from a sheer cliff at an altitude of about 8,200 meters. Well, Harila was accused of not caring about her until she died.

Austrian climbing duo Wilhelm Steindl and Philip Flämig, who were on K2 that day, said their drone footage showed the climbers simply walking past the porter’s body, rather than trying to save him.

“He was being cared for by one person while others were pushing towards the summit. The fact is there was no organized rescue operation although there were sherpas and mountain guides on site who were able to take action,” Flamig said.

“Such a thing is unthinkable in the Alps. He is treated like a second-class human. If he were a westerner, he would be rescued immediately. No one feels responsible. What happened is a disgrace. A human who is still alive is left for the record,” he added.

According to Steindl, who visited the porter’s family after coming down the mountain, Hassan was working to pay the medical bills for his diabetic mother despite his lack of experience.

Harila has rejected the accusations and insisted his team did everything they could to save him. “It’s not true that we didn’t do anything to help him. We tried to bring him back for an hour and a half and my cameraman stayed another hour to look after him,” he said.

“Given his condition, it’s hard to see how he could have been saved. He fell in perhaps the most dangerous part of the mountain where the possibilities of taking someone away are limited by narrow roads and poor snow conditions,” he added.

Harila said when his team found Hassan, he was not wearing gloves or a jacket and did not appear to be being given oxygen.

K2 is widely regarded as one of the most difficult and deadliest of the five highest mountains in the world. Data for 2018 shows more than a fifth of climbing attempts end in death. Experts say the topography on K2 is more difficult than Everest because it is less flat, and prone to landslides and rockfalls.
