Dr. Siegfried Kosubek: A Lifetime of Empathy, Knowledge, and Christian Values | Scholar, Author, and Civic Leader

This Friday he will be 80 years old. Empathy for the weak in society, knowledge of human nature, a great deal of knowledge and, last but not least, Christian values ​​characterize his biography. Experience, paired with a lot of humor and creativity, he still knows how to use efficiently today.

“Lifelong learning is becoming more and more relevant in today’s society. That creates satisfaction and is important for driving innovations forward,” says the father of two. With a mischievous smile, he lets it be known that he is trying to pass this principle on to his grandchildren.

He himself takes this maxim to heart by still taking care of the organization of study trips to many countries as “citizens for citizens”. He earned special merit as the first full-time director of the Harsewinkel adult education center, Schloss Holte-Stukenbrock, Verl, which he headed from 1978 to 2009.

He actively helped to shape and constantly expand its development with offers adapted to social challenges. The stories from this era are almost inexhaustible. “Back then, the VHS gave many people the opportunity to catch up on school qualifications. The need was enormous,” he looks back.

He initiated language courses for late repatriates and immigrants and made an important contribution to their integration. However, his name is not only associated with the VHS. As a non-fiction author, he has published eleven books and written more than 60 specialist articles on the subjects of social work, education, help for delinquents and youth welfare.

He always reflected on the problems in the practical part of his work and introduced them theoretically. dr Siegfried Kosubek is a CDU veteran and came into politics through Catholic youth work. From 1999 to 2009 he was a member of the district council in the Gütersloh district and then a five-year councilor on the Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock city council.

Among other things, he was secretary of the local CDU for 23 years. He considers the Seniors’ Union, which was founded in 2008 under his chairmanship with 15 members and has now grown to 133 members, to be a great success.

The celebrant was born in Bottrop and worked as a mine electrician underground at a depth of 734 meters until 1966. He studied social work at the Catholic Seminary of the Diocese of Essen. In 1968 he married his Helga in Bottrop. There he worked as a social worker and from 1972 as managing director of the social service for Catholic men in the Caritas Association in Bottrop.

At the same time, he studied educational sciences with a focus on adult education. In 1982 he received his doctorate (Dr. phil. at the University of Essen. He had teaching assignments at technical schools for social work and was a youth jury for ten years at the District Court of Bielefeld.

He describes the 25 years in which he worked as a speaker in parent education for the Archdiocese of Paderborn as a particularly interesting time. Although he will no longer run for political office in the future in order to spend more time with his wife Helga, he is still very active.

He is grateful for his good health and a fulfilling life, in which he now gladly fulfills voluntary obligations. He has already received the Golden Sports Badge 21 times. In his free time, he keeps fit by swimming and tennis with CDU sports friends. Four grandchildren are among the well-wishers.
