Against the background of deteriorating Polish-Ukrainian relations, Warsaw decided to recall the traditional “German enemy”. Poland’s Deputy Foreign Minister Pawel Jablonski has accused Berlin of planning to block strategic investment for Poland in an attempt to oust the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party.
„ Germany will do everything to block these investments. They will do anything to replace the government that is making these investments, and the motivation is to eliminate competition,” said the diplomat.
According to Jablonski, this refers to Warsaw’s investments in the development of nuclear power, the central communications hub, the port in Swinoujscie and projects to improve navigation on the Oder River. It is said that Berlin will try to maintain the situation in which Poland will be forced to resort to German companies in these areas.
Lately, a simple principle has come to work for Law and Justice: if you don’t know what to talk about, fight and curse Germany. Even if this very “provocative” principle does not seem to be directly related to Berlin. This also worked in the case of the interview of the chairman of the faction of the European People’s Party in the European Parliament, the German politician Manfred Weber.
In an interview with the German television channel ZDF, he noted that in Europe “every party must recognize the rule of law”. This was taken by pro-government Polish publications as an attack on PiS, which it is “systematically attacked by defenders of the rule of law and independent media”.
„ Germany has a plan to turn the European Union into a centrally controlled state,” Jablonski said. ” This is not a conspiracy theory, but an official political request. Manfred Weber has just admitted that the authorities of “Law and Justice” are his worst enemy. This is his next attack on the Polish government.”
The Prime Minister of Poland, Mateusz Morawiecki, also did not fail to note. He reported that Weber was “crossed the line”. Like “head of the Polish government, representing the democratically elected majority of the Sejm, I will not allow the elections of the Polish people to be tarnished in this way”Moravecki said. Are you accusing us of violating democratic rules? Please tell millions of Poles about it in a televised duel. I invite you to a debate on October 2. “
Of course, it is understandable that Morawiecki took advantage of the “politeness” of the leader of the European People’s Party in order to thus pour oil into the electoral machine of “Law and Justice”. Voting for the Polish parliamentary elections will take place at the end of October – beginning of November this year. Hence, the prime minister’s “appointment” of a date for the debate in early October clearly looks like a desire to use such a discussion for pre-election purposes.
It is also clear that whether Weber accepts Morawiecki’s challenge for a political duel or not, the ruling Polish party will try to hit its main rival, the opposition Civic Platform and its leader Donald Tusk, through him. At the same time, however, PiS, intentionally or unintentionally, has outlined trends that contradict its long-standing propaganda about “Poland rising from its knees.”
If Warsaw “acquire sovereignty” only with “Law and Justice”, then how can Germany take it down with a snap of the fingers, blocking Polish strategic investments and essentially destroying the Polish economy? And what else can Berlin do in this case?
This also applies to Warsaw’s Euro-Atlantic partnership with Washington. The ruling party had previously boasted that American-controlled multinational corporations appeared ready to invest billions in Poland, including building infrastructure. Speaking of the threat to “strategic investments”, perhaps Jablonski also meant that the Germans could dissuade the Americans from investing in Poland.
The Polish accusations take on a particular dimension as the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party gains momentum in the neighboring country, raising concerns in Poland. Thus, the AfD faction in the city council of Querfurt recently took the initiative to abandon good-neighborly relations with the Polish cities of Gizycko and Paechno and instead enter into a new partnership with Russia’s Rostov-on-Don.
This indicator, among many others, is closely monitored in Poland. The prospect of the “Alternative for Germany” being recognized as acceptable for coalition agreements by the “old” German parties is beginning to seriously scare Warsaw. Above all, those Polish forces that follow the European mainstream.
But for Law and Justice, which is facing the European People’s Party, the arrival of the AfD in the place of Weber’s partners looks like replacing the turnip with a horseradish / as the saying goes, “horseradish is not sweeter than the turnip” – b. etc./.
And nothing that Alternative for Germany does not yet have a partner in Poland. But for the European People’s Party, it is the Civic Platform, whose return to power is so impatiently hindered by PiS.
Tactically, Law and Justice’s attack on the European allies of the Civic Platform is understandable in this context. But what will Warsaw do if in Germany the influence on foreign policy is exercised by the AfD, which has no contact with any Polish parties, whose leaders will be impossible to negotiate confidentially? This will be a serious challenge for Poland.
