The Korea Meteorological Administration said that Typhoon Kanun, the 6th, weakened to a tropical depression at 6:00 am today (11th) at a point 80 km southeast of Pyongyang, North Korea.

Kanun landed in Geoje, South Gyeongsang Province, at 9:20 am yesterday (10th) and crossed the truce line at around 1 am today (11th) and entered North Korea.

Typhoon Kanun stayed inland for about 16 hours after landing on the Korean Peninsula before passing over to North Korea, which was unusually long.

However, contrary to initial expectations, it did not reach the north-south end of the Korean Peninsula.

It is analyzed that it landed with a somewhat weaker force than expected and failed to maintain its power while passing inland and causing friction with Korea’s complex terrain.

Kanun was recorded as the first typhoon to cross the Baekdudaegan from the southeast to the northwest of Korea.
