Apple will reportedly name its most expensive phone this year the iPhone 15 Ultra
There is speculation about an increase in storage capacity and the composition of the new chipset
Photos of the new USB-C ports are also circulating on the Internet
In just a month, Apple will introduce a new generation of iPhones. While at first it might have seemed like only minor intergenerational improvements would be coming this year, the latest leaks indicate a fairly decent portion of upgrades are coming. In addition, other pieces of the puzzle appeared this week, thanks to which this year’s apples take on even more concrete outlines.
iPhone 15 Ultra?
The fact that Apple will introduce four new iPhones this year is a well-known fact. However, a question mark hangs over their names, or rather over the name of the most equipped of them. Already at the beginning of this year, there was speculation that Apple could drop the long-standing Pro Max designation and choose Ultra instead. This name is now “confirmed” by images of unofficial covers sold in China.
Unofficial covers for the iPhone 15 Ultra
While renaming a flagship iPhone may seem untrustworthy, we wouldn’t shy away from this leak – after all, it’s the exact same way we learned about the iPhone 14 Plus last year. This year, Apple also has a reason for renaming, because the iPhone 15 Ultra will not only be an enlarged iPhone 15 Pro, but also a slightly more equipped model, because it will be equipped with a periscopic telephoto lens with the ability to get closer.
Up to 2TB of storage
In connection with the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Ultra, there was speculation this week about increasing the storage capacity. According to MacRumors website is doubled for all variants – starting at 256 GB and ending at an incredible 2 TB. Although this capacity may seem unnecessary, it is necessary to think that the recording of ProRes video in 4K resolution eats up a considerable portion of the storage.
Unfortunately, with higher storage capacity, higher prices are likely to come – Mark Gurman recently agreed with analyst Jeff Pu that Apple will probably increase the price of this year’s flagship iPhones by $100 – the cheapest iPhone 15 Pro could thus start at $1,099 (in our about 36,990 crowns).
Apple A17 Bionic
This year’s top-of-the-line iPhones will also get the new A17 Bionic chipset, for which Apple is preparing several improvements according to fresh information from this week. While the processor unit will remain six-core, Apple will reportedly increase the number of cores from five to six for the graphics chip. The processor should at least increase the clock speed of the powerful cores, from 3.46 to 3.7 GHz.
Apple A17 – t8130 – Coll
6 CPU Cores + 6 GPU Cores
3.70 GHz
6GB LPDDR5 DRAM – Micron/Samsung
TSMC 3nm ProcessLPDDR = Low Power Double Data Rate SDRAM
The A17 is used by both the D83 and D84, also likely planned for D47 and D48 (16 series), as the D9x will use t8140 (A18).

The Apple A17 Bionic is supposed to include 6 GB of LPDDR5 type operating memory, so the capacity should not be increased here, although there was speculation about 8 GB recently. However, the chip should improve at least in efficiency, thanks to the use of a more modern 3nm manufacturing process from TSMC.
According to the practice of recent years, Apple plans to use the A17 Bionic chip in the basic iPhone 16 and 16 Plus next year, while the top models iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Ultra will upgrade to the A18 chipset.
USB-C confirmed!
It is already known that Apple will replace the original Lightning port with the more universal and widespread USB-C on all this year’s iPhones. This week, photos of circuits with these connectors for the iPhone 15, 15 Plus and 15 “Ultra” appeared on the Internet.
This is what the USB-C ports for this year’s iPhones should look like
In theory, Apple could wait two more generations with the introduction of USB-C iPhones, since the upcoming regulation of the European Parliament on the unified connector will not apply to new devices until the end of 2024.
Will older iPhones also get USB-C?
Wild speculation is also related to the deployment of the USB-C port, which was stirred up by a developer appearing on the X network under the nickname Aaron. He discovered in the code of tvOS 17 beta 5 the identifiers of two iPhones that have not yet been presented – iPhone 14.1 and 14.9.
tvOS 17.0 Beta 5 references two iPhone models that currently don’t exist:
iPhone14,1
iPhone14,9— Aaron (@aaronp613) August 9, 2023
These identifiers do not belong to the upcoming iPhone 15 series, as Apple assigns indicators according to the generation of chipsets used. The number 14 in the indicator is tied to the two-year-old A15 Bionic chipset that powered:
iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max iPhone 14 and 14 Plus iPhone SE (3rd generation)
So, if Apple is preparing the premiere of “new” iPhones with the A15 Bionic chipset, it may be a new revision of one of the above models – the iPhone SE is most often mentioned. And what should the new revision bring? They are talking about simply replacing the Lightning port with USB-C. But this speculation is very wild indeed and we do not attach too much weight to it. After all, the iPhone SE is not a sales blockbuster for Apple to make such a significant change to it when it doesn’t have to.
