Nigerian President Bola Tinubu is ready to negotiate with the leaders of the new authorities in Niger. He stated this at the end of the Economic Community of West Africa (ECOWAS) summit, Al Jazeera reports.
“We will continue to engage with stakeholders, including the leaders of the coup, to ensure a return to democracy as soon as possible,” Tinubu said.
West African heads of state today held an emergency summit in Nigeria to work out a new position on Niger after the country’s new authorities fended off their threat to use force to restore democracy in the country.
In his opening speech to the heads of state of the 15-member Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the President of Nigeria Bola Tinubu stated that the bloc would seek a solution to the situation, since the coup “poses a threat … to the entire West African region.”
One of Nigeria’s religious leaders is the head of an evangelical church Elijah Ayodele previously stated that the President of the United States Joe Biden you should not interfere in the situation in Niger, where there is an attempted coup. A possible US intervention in the African republic would be a serious mistake, he said.
Nigerian threats to invade Nigerian rebels by Bola Tinubu, who was elected just two months ago and has led regional efforts to stem the crisis in neighboring Niger, have been thwarted by bitter conflict with domestic opposition, the Financial Times reports.
“Opposition to military intervention, which comes from representatives of all political forces in Nigeria, complicates Tinubu’s attempts to find a way out of the unfolding crisis and restore Nigeria as a regional power,” the newspaper writes.
As reported EADailyon the morning of July 26, the Presidential Guard of Niger detained the President Mohammad Bazum at his residence in the capital, Niamey. The work of all institutions in the country was suspended, the borders were closed. According to media reports, the reason for the change of power was that the President of Niger raised the issue of dismissing the commander of the presidential guard, General Omar Tchiani. The ECOWAS countries issued an ultimatum, promising to launch military intervention if the rebels did not come to their senses.
