Ukrainian Navy Implements Temporary Corridors for Commercial Ships Amidst Tensions with Russia

“Temporary corridors have been announced for commercial ships going to and from Ukrainian ports,” the Ukrainian navy said on social media.

Corridors are open from today, and Ukrainian warships are unlikely to provide any escort, but civilian ships will be equipped with surveillance cameras, the recordings of which will be seen by everyone, to prove that these ships do not pose any military threat, a press representative of the Ukrainian Navy said.

It is not yet clear whether any civilian ships have already left the southern ports of Ukraine on the new routes.

In July, Russia pulled out of the international “grain deal” that guaranteed safe passage in the Black Sea for ships with cargoes of Ukrainian grain. Since the withdrawal, Russia has repeatedly shelled the cities of the Black Sea coast of Ukraine.

Russia announced in July that it would consider any ship approaching Ukraine in the Black Sea as a potential military cargo carrier.
