Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – An object shaped like a giant question mark was discovered in space by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope.
At that time, James Webb was carrying out his work as usual. Then, accidentally caught something oddly shaped.
Scientists suspect that this foreign object is a pair of galaxies that have merged into one. They happen to form a question mark shape, as seen from Webb’s perspective.
“Their interaction may have led to a distorted shape of the question mark,” said a representative from the Space Telecope Science Institute, quoted from InsiderThursday (10/8/2023).
“This is probably the first time we’ve seen this particular object. Additional follow-up will be needed to find out what it is for sure.” they added.
The question mark-shaped object could also be a single galaxy with an odd shape, but merging seems the most likely explanation, according to Matt Caplan, an assistant professor of physics at Illinois State University.
NASA released the series of images on July 26, and said in a statement that the question mark object shows the “antics” of two young stars that are still actively forming.
“Stars are buried deep, appearing as orange-white blotches.”
The pair of stars, known as Herbig-Haro 46/47, grow as they feed on the gas and dust that surrounds them in a disk. The disk itself is not visible, but its shadow appears in two dark conical areas next to the star.
The pink-orange lobe that dominates the image is material that has been emitted by stars as they grow over eons.
NASA added that the pair of stars are important objects to study because they are relatively young, only a few thousand years.
