Understanding Gianotti-Crosti Syndrome: A Rare Childhood Disease with Skin Rash

Diseases in children that are accompanied by a skin rash are often worrisome for parents, especially when it is something new and the cause is unknown. Some of them appear suddenly and at the beginning of the day, as happened to Mandy Moore’s son.

In a series of posts on her Instagram stories, the actress shared that her son woke up one weekend with a rash on his arms, legs and feet, which turned out to be a rare disease of childhood called Gianotti-Crosti Syndrome. We tell you what it consists of, what its symptoms are and how it is treated.

A rare rash

Skin reactions can be difficult to diagnose with the naked eye, as some can look very similar to each other. In the case of the rash that Mandy Moore’s son has, they had to consult several specialists before knowing for sure that it was Gianotti-Crosti Syndrome, since he did not present any other symptoms.

According to what the actress shared, the rashes that her son Gus had only appeared on his legs, feet and the back of his arms, causing him a bit of itching for which he was prescribed a medication. Although they were concerned at first, this rare disease is not one that is serious or permanently affects children.

What is Gianotti-Crosti Syndrome

It is a rare and benign skin disease which is also called papular acrodermatitis of infancy. It usually affects boys and girls between the ages of nine months and nine years, although some cases have been documented in adolescents.

Its cause is not known with certainty, but thought to be a reaction to a previous viral infectiony an association with Epstein-Barr viruses has been seencytomegalovirus, coxsackie virus, parainfluenza virus, respiratory syncytial virus, parvovirus b-19, Hepatitis B virus or herpes virus type 6, among others.

In some cases it has appeared after receiving the vaccine against polio, hepatitis A, diphtheria, smallpox, whooping cough or influenza, but this could be a simple coincidence, since, at the age in which this syndrome is most frequent (between one and six years), many children have a history of a recent vaccination.

Although Gianotti-Crosti Syndrome can occur in anyone, it has been observed to be more common in children with atopic dermatitis or eczema.

What are your symptoms

They usually occur catarrhal symptoms accompanied by fever, tiredness and lack of appetite between two and seven days before the skin lesions appear, but there have been cases in which these first symptoms do not appear (or are so mild that they go unnoticed) and only the eruptions appear on the skin. skin, as in the case of Mandy Moore’s son.

The rash manifests as red or pink papules -which may or may not have liquid inside-, and which measure from one to 10 centimeters, extending symmetrically. They appear mainly on the cheeks, buttocks, arms and legs, while the trunk is usually free.

These papules or eruptions usually resolve on their own and do not leave scars or marks on the skin.

what is your treatment

In most cases no treatment is necessarysince this syndrome has a benign and self-limited course, with few symptoms that disappear over the days.

If the rash is itchy and the child is upset, treatment focuses on relieving symptoms with antipyretics and antihistamines. The lesions associated with Gianotti-Crosti Syndrome usually disappear spontaneously from 15 to 60 days.
