Describing himself as a “Kazakhstan-born Israeli tech entrepreneur,” Volozj has drawn criticism in Russia for his apparent attempt to distance himself from the country.
– Even though I moved to Israel in 2014, I have to take my share of the responsibility for Russia’s actions, he says.
Volozj has both Russian and Israeli passports. He founded the internet company Yandex in Russia in 1997. It was listed on the US Nasdaq stock exchange in 2011.
He resigned as CEO of the company and left the board after the European Union included him on its list of sanctions against Russian entities and individuals in June 2022.
