The press called for responsible coverage

Libreville, Wednesday August 9, 2023 (Gabon Info) – A seminar was organized from August 3 to 5 in Lambaréné with a view to strengthening the capacities of journalists on “the fundamentals of a free and regulated media ecosystem during the electoral period”.

The Gabonese press is now better informed about the role it must play in order to entrench democracy during the election period. The seminar organized from August 3 to 5 in Lambaréné at the initiative of the High Authority for Communication (HAC) with the support of the Commission of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) and the Office of United Nations for Central Africa (UNOCA) for the benefit of Gabonese journalists made it possible to make them aware of the principles to be observed during this sensitive and delicate period in the life of a nation.

Placed under the theme: “The fundamentals of a free and regulated media ecosystem during the election period” has above all made it possible to raise the awareness of women and men in the media to greater professionalism. Abdou Abarry, head of UNOCA, took the opportunity to invite the press to “contribute to the prevention and the fight against the possible rise of hate speech and the stigmatization of certain candidates, but also the high exposure of the public to misinformation, disinformation and misinformation”. The Lambaréné meeting allowed him “to discuss the ways and means of avoiding these scourges which undermine democracy as well as living together in most of our societies, during electoral periods”.

To this end, both sides were invited to observe the principles of balance, neutrality, equity and equality in the processing and dissemination of information in order to guarantee free, transparent and peaceful elections.
