Agricola Moderna: Sustainable Vertical Cultivation Startup Receives €10 Million Loan from Intesa Sanpaolo

Agricola Moderna, the startup dedicated to vertical cultivation in Milan, has received a loan of 10 million from Intesa Sanpaolo with the ‘green’ guarantee from Sace. It will be used, explains a note, for the technological implementation of a second plant, after the one opened in Melzo in 2019, under construction in Agnadello (CR), operational from September 2024. The new plant will enclose the entire production chain on a area of about 9,000 square meters, of which 2,000 for cultivation for a total cultivation area, on several levels, of 11,000 square meters. Production will be over 900 tons per year. It will be 100% powered by renewable sources and automated, everything will be done inside the plant: from sowing to product packaging. “It will have thousands of sensors and will be managed through AI systems that we have been working on over the years. Our goal is to perfect processes and eliminate waste and chemistry harmful to the environment and to humans. While in an agro – traditional food, about 1/3 of food resources are wasted we will save about 95% of water and land and we will make the process more and more circular: the water evaporated from plants, for example, will not be wasted but analysed, reintegrated mineral salts and reintroduced into the system” explains Benjamin Franchetti co-founder of Agricola Moderna. “The Agnadello farm is a new starting point for distributing our products throughout Italy. In the future we also want to open up to international markets with new plants not only in Italy but also in Europe” adds Pierluigi Giuliani, co-founder of Agricola Moderna.
