The findings were revealed by archaeologists at Nicolaus Copernicus University, Poland. They explored the cemetery in the village of Pien which is famous for its gruesome artifact finds.

Initially, they explored which cemeteries had the most reputation scary . There are about 30 bodies buried here and one of them is the skeleton of a small child wrapped in the padded chain.

“The padlock at the foot implies some form of protection against something bad or is feared to happen. This ancient practice is called the rite of exorcism (anti-vampire),” said archaeologist Dariusz Poliński as quoted by the Daily Star, Thursday (10/8/2023).

The position of the skeleton also confirmed Poliński’s suspicions. The child’s face was placed at the bottom according to ancient beliefs so that people who are thought to be descended from vampires cannot do things that threaten the safety of residents.

Similar findings in September 2022 at nearby locations revealed female skeletons that were treated differently. His body was clamped by a scythe and a padlock. “The people here have used ways to ensure that the dead cannot rise again by cutting off their heads, feet, placing their faces underground, burying them and pelting them with stones,” said Poliński.
