The shortage is due to supply problems at both producers of the vaccine, the GGD reports. The national organization assumes that sufficient stock of the vaccine will not be available until January next year.
Cats, dogs, bats and monkeys with rabies in particular transmit the virus to humans. They do this by biting, scratching or licking a wound. Rabies, or rabies, leads to a very serious brain infection that is fatal.
According to the GGD, about 60,000 people worldwide die from rabies every year. The virus does not occur among animals in the Netherlands.
Only after incident
It is not that there are no vaccines available at all. People who have had an ‘incident’ during their trip can get a vaccination from the GGD. People who had already started a cure are probably still allowed to finish it. They must inquire with their own GGD whether this is still possible.
The GGD strongly advises travelers not to touch live or dead animals abroad. Anyone who nevertheless sustains an injury by an animal must clean the wound thoroughly with water, soap, betadine or 70 percent alcohol. The emergency center of your own health insurance company must also be contacted immediately.
A complete cure against rabies, consisting of two injections, protects for life according to the GGD. The vaccination is usually sufficiently effective seven days after the first shot.
