In early 2024, Samsung may change the manufacturing materials of its top-of-the-line flagship Galaxy S24 Ultra. According to a teaser shared by a whistleblower, in addition to having more upgrades than the lower-priced model, this version will also reportedly switch to titanium. Ice Universe shared a teaser on Twitter using the periodic table, sharing the number 22. Through the statistics of this number, it is concluded that the titanium element will be very likely to be added, and judging from the reply to someone in the post, the Galaxy S24 Ultra is likely to be the only one in the family equipped with a new case model.
Apple is rumored to be using the same material on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, with the latest claiming that the company will be using grade 5 titanium.
For years, phone makers have stuck to aluminum or stainless steel for their most premium phones, but the shift to titanium is slowly making waves, and it won’t be surprising to hear from Xiaomi, OnePlus, and more in the future. However, when it comes to making smartphones, the advantages of titanium over aluminum are obvious, so why haven’t manufacturers embraced the material yet?
The answer is that titanium is too expensive, which is why the Galaxy S24 Ultra is likely to be the only product in the entire lineup with this special body. If Samsung wants to use the same material on the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24 Plus, it may have to raise prices on both models, hurting its sales. The South Korean giant’s smartphone shipments are currently declining every quarter, and the business unit is struggling, so it may need new ideas to generate consumer interest.
Unfortunately, the whistleblower did not comment on whether the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s switch to titanium would force Samsung to raise the price of its next year’s flagship, but the company is likely to weigh all possibilities before making a final decision. Samsung may already be testing a few titanium prototypes, but if the phone maker isn’t satisfied with the test results, a commercial model could feature an aluminum frame.
