The Norwegian authorities warn of more flooding. Although it seems to be less raining, the large amount of water is now flowing towards the lower coastal areas.
“The next two to three days will be absolutely critical,” Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said at a press conference on Wednesday evening. The emergency services will also be on standby for the foreseeable future.
Norway has been struggling with extremely bad weather for days due to storm Hans. The weather forecasts look a little better in the coming days, but that does not mean that the danger has passed, Gahr Støre warned.
In recent days, so much rain has fallen that Norway’s highest water level in fifty years was reached. That water will soon all flow towards the lower-lying areas. The people who live there must expect (even more) flooding in the coming days. Landslides can also occur.
More than 3,000 people had to be evacuated due to the flooding. Many roads are under water and train traffic is also flat in some places. A dam also broke in the east of the country on Thursday.
Code red, the highest alarm, still applies in the country. Neighboring Sweden also issued code red. There, among other things, the river Göta burst its banks and floods also caused a lot of damage.
