The Indian inmate (Thomas – 33 years old) is behind the bars of the Central Prison in Dubai, owed a legal blood money of 200,000 dirhams, as a result of “accidentally causing the death of a worker”, through his negligence and failure to perform his work duties as required of him.
The case resulted in him, as he did not register the names, and did not inform the company of the presence of an engineer and workers working on the site.
(Thomas) appealed to those with white hands to help him pay the blood money to the families of the deceased worker.
He told «Emirates Today» that he left behind a sick old mother, wife, and three-year-old son, who are waiting for the return of their breadwinner and head of their family.
He added that he moved to the UAE in 2014 to earn his living and secure the means for a decent life for his family, and he did not expect that he would find himself in this situation.
He explained that he was working in a private sector company as a security guard. One day in 2018, the company asked him to go to a building under construction and guard it, because there were construction equipment in it. And he had to, according to his job duties, record the attendance and departure of all workers and engineers entering and leaving the building.
He continued that one of the engineers and a number of workers came to the building, so he wrote the name of the engineer immediately, and decided to postpone writing the names of the workers, but he forgot that.
While one of the workers was busy installing lighting and wires between the fourth and fifth floors, his leg slipped over the barrier on which he was standing, and he fell to the ground.
It was found, after being examined by the paramedics, that he had died.
And after a while, (Thomas) traveled home in 2019 on vacation. When he returned to the UAE, he was arrested and sent to the police station on charges of “accusing the death of a person by mistake.”
And it was decided to hold (Thomas) responsible for the death of the worker, as a result of his neglect of an essential part of his work tasks, which is registering the names of the workers. Consequently, the company was not notified of the presence of an engineer and workers working on the site.
And a ruling was issued obligating (Thomas) to pay a legal blood money of 200 thousand dirhams to the family of the deceased.
(Thomas) confirmed that his modest financial capabilities do not allow him to pay the blood money, explaining that he is the only breadwinner for his family members.
He appealed to good people and people with merciful hearts to help him pay the legal blood money so that he can return to his life and his family.
