13-Year-Old Boy Finds Rare Megalodon Shark Tooth on Beach in England

Jakarta

A 10-centimeter long megalodon shark tooth was found by a boy named Ben (13) on a beach in England.

Reported by detikTravel citing BBC, Wednesday (9/8/2023), the teeth of the prehistoric creature were found in Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex. The find is quite rare. But the Natural History Museum says megalodon teeth could have been bought in a store and then lost on a beach.

The Essex Wildlife Trust said the teeth ranged in age from 20 million years to 3.6 million years. It is said several have been found in The Naze but the most common is a broken tooth.

Ben’s father, Jason, said his son was thrilled with the find. Jason and his son were on a weekend getaway from their home in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire to look for fossils.

They arrived on Friday evening and by Sunday morning had walked 26 km along the coast. They wake at the crack of dawn and Ben finds a giant tooth under a rock around 7:00 am.

“We could just see the tip sticking out and Ben immediately knew it was something different and pulled from the sand,” said Jason, 50.

The pair brought their find to the Essex Wildlife Trust Discovery Center in Walton-on-the-Naze. They wanted to confirm that it was a megalodon tooth.

Jason says he and his son go to Walton-on-the-Naze to hunt for fossils once a year and also to the Jurassic Coast. it is a 153 km long coast in southern England.

Ben said he wanted to be a paleontologist. And, those giant animal teeth are a great addition to the collection.
